Generating User-Mode Process Dumps on Windows

This Article Applies to:

  • Microsoft Windows Operating Systems

If you are working with our Business Technical Support to diagnose performance or compatibility issues with AVG Business products, you may be asked to provide a user-mode process dump file from your device. This dump file can be generated manually, without a PC crash.

Windows 8 and Higher

  1. Log into the device as an administrator or user with administrator permissions
  2. Press CTRL + SHIFT + ESC to open Task Manager
  3. Click More Details at the bottom of the Task Manager window
  4. Click the Processes tab
  5. Right-click the processes related to AVG and select Create dump file
  6. Click Ok in the success dialog box displaying where the file is stored
    • Default location is C:\Users\[your username]\AppData\Local\Temp

If our Business Technical Support requests AVG file dumps, repeat steps 3-5 for each file listed below.

  • AVGUI.exe — AVG Business Antivirus user interface
  • AVGSvc.exe — AVG Business Antivirus service
    • You may not be able to dump this file manually. In this case you would need to perform a whole system dump.
  • afwServ.exe — AVG Firewall service
  • instup.exe — AVG Business Antivirus setup service (only when AVG setup or update is running)

Windows 7

  1. Log into the device as an administrator or user with administrator permissions
  2. Press CTRL + SHIFT + ESC to open Task Manager
  3. Click the Processes tab
  4. Check Show processes from all users at the bottom of the window
  5. Right-click the processes related to AVG and select Create dump file
  6. Click Ok in the success dialog box displaying where the file is stored
    • Default location is C:\Users\[your username]\AppData\Local\Temp

If our Business Technical Support requests AVG file dumps, repeat steps 4-5 for each file listed below.

Sending Dump Files for Analysis

After generating the file, send it to the support agent who requested the data. If the file is too large to be emailed, please upload it to our FTP server (see Uploading Files to AVG FTP Server), then provide the name of the uploaded file to the agent so they can locate it on the server.
